Plastic Test Tubes (2) with Screw-On Tops
How does acid rain destroy statues?
Ingredients:
- Test tubes (provided)
- Chalk ½ in long (not provided)
- Some vinegar (not provided)
What to Do:
- Hold the test tube and put a piece of chalk inside.
- Pour enough vinegar to cover the chalk
- As you add the vinegar to the chalk, observe what happened.
What happened?
The vinegar is an acid, obviously much stronger than acid rain, but can quickly show the long-term effects of acid on limestone statues (most statues are limestone). Chalk is made of a variety of limestone substances. The acid reacts with the limestone and dissolves the statue. Over many years acid rain can have a strong effect on statues.
