Knife Switch & LED Bulb

Complete the Circuit

Important: this experiment also requires the equipment in SS-21

Ingredients:

  • Knife Switch (provided)
  • LED bulb with wires (provided)
  • Wire with Alligator clips (Need Item SS-21) or additional copper wire
  • (2) AA battery (not provided)

What to do:

  1. First, unscrew the caps from the posts on the knife switch and attach one of the alligator clips to one post.
  2. Wrap the exposed end of one of the wires leading from the light bulb around the other post of the knife switch. You may screw the cap back on the post to hold the wire in place.
  3. Now supply energy by touching the loose wire ends (one with alligator clip) to the ends of (2) AA battery laying together with the positive end touch the negative end of the other battery.  This is easiest done by laying these two batteries on a table with opposite end touching.  Then attach the alligator clip end to one side of the battery (Try clamping the alligator clip to the top or positive lead of the battery.)
  4. Next attach the other loose end of wire to the opposite end of the two batteries.  You may have to try reversing the direction of the battery. When the knife switch is in the down position, you should see light. Notice that the energy is flowing in a circle from battery to wire to knife switch to wire to light source to wire to battery.
